A psychedelic drug that alters your thinking, sense of time, emotions and can cause hallucinations. It is a white odourless crystalline substance and is sold as a liquid, tablet, capsule or blotting paper and is often diluted with other materials such as water and alcohol.

Immediate effects

  • Vivid perceptual distortions
  • Poor coordination
  • Distorted sense of time and space
  • Increase body temperature and/or chills
  • Anxiety and distress
  • Vomiting
  • Numbness

Note: While common, not everyone will experience the above side effects. Effects will depend heavily on variations including age, weight, health conditions and the amount taken.

Long-term effects

  • Flashbacks (a distortion that involves perceptual or emotional changes)
  • Worsen mental health conditions such as anxiety, schizophrenia or psychosis

Note: While common, not everyone will experience the above side effects. Effects will depend heavily on variations including age, weight, health conditions and the amount taken.

There is also research into LSD being used therapeutically involving controlled dosage in treating depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and reducing anxiety. Learn more about it here.

How to reduce harm

  • Use in a safe environment with people you trust
  • Consider the impact of your mood and the environment you’re in
  • Do not take if you’re not feeling good physically or mentally
  • Have a sober friend with you, especially if it’s your first time, as a ‘trip sitter’

Note: It’s common for substances such as NBOMe (also known as New Psychoactive Substances) to be sold as LSD because they are designed to mimic or produce similar effects as LSD

How it works with other drugs

Mixing LSD with other drugs can have unpredictable effects and increase the risk of harm. When mixing with substances such as Cocaine or Meth and Ice it can increase anxiety, paranoia and thought loops. It can have negative psychological experiences when taken with substances like Cannabis or Nang's.
